Empress Illuminate
Empress Illuminate is our IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial. IPL delivers broad-spectrum light into the skin, where it is absorbed by pigment and by the hemoglobin in superficial blood vessels. The absorbed energy breaks down excess melanin and reduces the visibility of dilated capillaries, while leaving the surface of the skin intact. IPL is commonly used to treat sun damage, brown spots, freckling, persistent facial redness, and the visible vessels associated with rosacea. Most patients complete a series of treatments spaced three to four weeks apart. Treated pigment typically darkens before flaking away over the following one to two weeks. A consultation is required to confirm that IPL is appropriate for your skin type.
HOW IT WORKS
Empress Illuminate uses broad-spectrum light to treat pigmentation and redness. Unlike lasers, which emit a single wavelength, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths that pass through the surface of the skin to target unwanted pigment, redness, and broken capillaries without damaging the surrounding tissue.
The light is absorbed by melanin or hemoglobin, where it converts to heat and breaks down the discoloration, while also stimulating collagen production below the surface. Over the following days and weeks, treated areas fade and skin tone becomes more even and firmer.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Treatment begins with a cleanse and a layer of protective gel. As the light pulses are delivered, most patients feel a brief warm snap. The session takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area treated. Afterward the skin may feel warm, look slightly pink, or feel tight. Dark spots often darken temporarily before they fade. Over the next 5 to 10 days, tone becomes brighter and more even as the skin turns over.
FAQs
How much treatment will I need?
Treatment plans are individualized. Most patients need a series of three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart to fully clear pigmentation, redness, and uneven tone. Improvement is often visible after a single session, but results are cumulative, with each session building on the last.
After the initial series, seasonal maintenance treatments help preserve results, particularly with frequent sun exposure or a tendency toward pigmentation.
Does it hurt?
Most patients feel a series of quick, warm snaps as the light is delivered, often compared to the flick of a rubber band. The sensation is brief and generally well tolerated, particularly with the cooling gel applied beforehand.
If your skin is very sensitive, I adjust the settings or add cooling measures to keep you comfortable throughout the session.
What's the Downtime?
Downtime is minimal. After treatment the skin may look slightly pink or feel warm, and this usually fades within a few hours. If pigmentation or sunspots were treated, they may darken or crust slightly over the next few days before flaking away on their own.
You can return to normal activities the same day. I recommend avoiding intense exercise, hot environments, and sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours. Consistent hydration, daily SPF, and gentle handling of the skin support the best result.
How long do results last?
Results typically last several months. After the initial series, most patients maintain a brighter, more even complexion for 6 to 12 months, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Pigment and redness fade, and collagen continues to remodel below the surface. Seasonal or quarterly touch-ups are recommended to maintain results, particularly if you are prone to pigmentation or redness, or spend significant time in the sun.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. Warmth or a rosy flush is common immediately after treatment and typically fades within a few hours. Treated pigmentation may darken temporarily and flake as the skin turns over. Minor swelling, sensitivity, or bruising occurs less commonly and generally resolves within a few days. Pigment change is a rare risk in deeper skin tones, which is why every treatment begins with a consultation to confirm that IPL is appropriate for your skin type.
What do I need to do before my Empress Illuminate Appointment?
Your skin needs to be calm and unsensitized before treatment. For two weeks beforehand, avoid tanning, whether natural or artificial, self-tanners, and significant sun exposure. Stop retinoids, exfoliants, and active acids such as glycolic or salicylic for at least 5 to 7 days prior, and avoid waxing and chemical peels in the treatment area. On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean, makeup-free skin, and skip lotions, perfumes, and deodorant on the area being treated. Tell me if you are taking antibiotics or any photosensitizing medication, or if you have had a recent sunburn, so the appointment can be rescheduled if treating would not be safe.
What do I need to know post my Empress Illuminate Appointment?
For the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment, avoid direct sun, intense heat such as saunas or hot yoga, heavy sweating, active skincare ingredients including retinoids, acids, and scrubs, and makeup on the treated area. Pigment may darken before it flakes away; do not pick or exfoliate it. For the next 14 days, wear broad-spectrum SPF daily, use gentle hydrating skincare only, and avoid facial treatments, waxing, and anything else that disrupts healing. Stay well hydrated. Most patients see results by day 7 to 10, with continued improvement as the skin regenerates.
